  1. From his questions, I'd guess he has little experience of 'normal' cycling and thinks that there's a big risk of falling off the bike and getting a serious head injury.

Falls are relatively rare for transport cyclists, and most involve skids (where the head doesn't touch the ground) or other situations where the natural instinct is to tuck in the head or otherwise avoid contact with the ground.

Helmets probably thwart these natural instincts, because of the additional size and mass to the head. So a fall in circumstances where, without a helmet, you'd never have hit your head could be quite likely to result in a impact to a helmeted head.

Rather than understanding the true situation, it's all too easy to think that the helmet has prevented a serious injury and that all cyclists should wear helmets at all times.

    1. The radio presenter comes over as predictable, smug, self-satisfied...

...and his approach is completely unhelpful

They seem to be following us. Its the attitude that has been the common one here but I see something positive going on. Not only are we getting over a hump but as soon as Australians see enough of this going on in England and Europe, old instincts will kick in. Society's do flip.
