  2. These people are all insane and doomed. There's no doubt that, seconds after each of these photos were taken, each and every cyclist in them fell off their bike and had their brains dashed all over the road, costing the taxpayer millions.

At least, that's the reaction you would get if you took a series of photos like this in any Australian town. Australians travel more and more every year, and must witness thousands of people cycling in foreign countries without helmets, yet the no helmet = death school of thought remains as strong as ever. I guess Australians must remain wilfully blind to helmetless cycling when they travel, so that they don't upset their own prejudices.

  3. We could have been what Salzburg is today and more if there had been no stupid helmet law in Oz. So while European cities becomes more people-friendly, cities Down Under regresses. At least until we get rid of the obsession with the polystyrene lid.

  4. You're both spot on - we're pathetic as a nation, aren't we? Why, god only knows, but it's sheer madness - we're missing out on so much

  5. Tirol, Salzburg, and Vorarlberg are the three Austrian provinces with the highest cycling rates in the country. Of course this must be because of the topography because as everyone knows you only get high cycling rates in flat places... ;-)

The thing I notice is that they ride through the winter there, but you don't see cycle helmets in winter. Cycling is a summer sport, in winter people only ride bicycle as transport, so no need for special clothes.
